The Tenth Doctor and Rose Back Together for Big Finish

Monday, 15 May 2017 - Reported by Marcus
David Tennant And Billie Piper are reprising their roles of the Tenth Doctor and his companion Rose Tyler in three Doctor Who audio dramas from Big Finish Productions in arrangement with BBC Worldwide.

David Tennant’s Doctor, portrayed on screen from December 2005 until December 2009, returned in the 50th Anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor, with Matt Smith and Sir John Hurt in 2013, and on audio for Big Finish with Catherine Tate in 2016.

Billie Piper portrayed the Doctor’s much-loved companion Rose in 2005 and 2006, returning for a number of stories in 2008. She also appeared as The Moment – which had taken Rose’s form – in The Day of the Doctor. These new stories will be Billie’s eagerly awaited debut for Big Finish.

Executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery says:
Getting David and Billie back together was definitely on my bucket list – two wonderful actors who created an era of Doctor Who which is so fondly remembered and brought a different aspect of the relationship between the Doctor and his companion to the fore – love, both platonic and unrequited. It’s great to have the Tenth Doctor and Rose back again!
Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor Adventures – Volume 2, will be released in November 2017. It is comprised of three hour-long full cast audio adventures.

The set opens with Attack of the Zaross by John Dorney, in which an alien invasion of Earth isn’t quite what it appears to be – Camille Coduri guest stars as Jackie Tyler.

In the second adventure, Sword of the Chevalier by Guy Adams, the Doctor and Rose arrive in Slough in 1791 and encounter Chevalier D’Eon, an enigmatic ex-spy who has lived his life as a woman. Together they must fend off alien slavers, who have come to Earth to abduct valuable humans.

Finally, in Cold Vengeance by Matt Fitton, the TARDIS arrives on Coldstar, a vast frozen food asteroid in deep space. But there is something sinister defrosting in the network of storage units… the Doctor’s old enemies the Ice Warriors! Nicholas Briggs plays Ice Lord Hasskor and Warrior Slaan.

Nicholas Briggs, who is the Voice of the Daleks on TV and for Big Finish, said
It was such a special time for me, working with Billie and David on the TV show, and it is such an honour to revisit it with them on audio.
Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor Adventures – Volume 2 is produced by David Richardson who said
We were thrilled by the response to the first volume. David Tennant and Catherine Tate were on fantastic form, and it’s so exciting to reunite David with Billie Piper, playing the Doctor and Rose together again after nine years! Their time in the series transformed Doctor Who into a prime-time and international hit, and we’ve worked very hard to live up to the incredible standards of Russell T Davies.
Special Preview of the Tenth Doctor and Rose

Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor Adventures – Volume 2 will be available in both a Limited Edition Deluxe box set, and as three individual vanilla releases.

Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor Adventures – Volume 1, starring David Tennant and Catherine Tate, is currently available on CD and download. For the next 24 hours it will be available at half price from the Big Finish website.

Caves of Androzani to get a German DVD release

Thursday, 11 May 2017 - Reported by Pascal Salzmann
German Mediabook DVD cover to "Caves of Androzani" (Credit: Pandastorm Pictures)Die Höhlen von Androzani DVD (Credit: Pandastorm Pictures) German DVD distributer Pandastorm Pictures announced on their Facebook page the release of The Caves of Androzani ("Die Höhlen von Androzani") for the German market. The serial will be dubbed to German specifically for this release, as no German dub exists for any story before The Twin Dilemma, with the exception of The Five Doctors.

The Caves of Androzani has never been broadcasted on German television. In the late 80's and early 90's German TV channel RTL Plus transmitted all serials featuring the seventh Doctor. In 1995 the channel VOX aired The Five Doctors and all serials featuring the sixth Doctor. All those stories have been released by Pandastorm Pictures on DVD boxed sets in the past few years.

There will be two different versions of Die Höhlen von Androzani:

  • Collectors Edition Mediabook: Limited and numbered to 1,500 copies. This edition looks like a book and will feature an extensive booklet and the English- and German-language soundtracks and subtitles. Also includes all special features that can be found on the UK Special Edition DVD. Release date: 25th August 2017
  • Regular Edition: Will be the same as the Mediabook, only in a standart DVD slip case. Release date: 13th October 2017

Doctor Who Official Block

Friday, 5 May 2017 - Reported by Marcus

Nerd Block, in association with BBC Worldwide, is launching the Doctor Who Official Block.

Subscribers will be able to receive exclusive and limited edition collectibles from their favorite Time Lords. The bi-monthly Block will include 5-7 mystery items each month, allowing fans to get their hands on official Doctor Who merchandise.

This month’s Block features an exclusive 6.5" Tenth Doctor figure, inspired by the Tenth Doctor's final episode The End of Time Part Two.

Doctor Who Official Block Lead Buyer Nicole Giffen explains her choice to include the figure in the first Block:
David Tennant is one of the most-beloved Doctors, so we couldn’t wait to include an exclusive variant figure of the Tenth Doctor in our Block. Showing the Doctor in his battle-worn state is an ode to the episode The End of Time Part Two, where he fights against the returning Time Lords. It’s one of my favorite scenes, and the figure captures the Doctor perfectly.
James Watson of Titan Merchandise had more details about the Battle Deco Tenth Doctor vinyl figure:
We're big David Tennant fans, and we wanted something special for the first Doctor Who Block. We wanted to give the fans something that would look great on a shelf (hence the larger scale) as well as pay tribute to an iconic moment in the show's history
Watson also talked about future plans for the project.
We will be announcing our next Doctor Who blind-box wave very soon. I can't say too much, but it'll cover the show's history and will feature some characters that we have been asked about for YEARS! I've seen the designs and I'm incredibly excited to reveal them. We're all colossal Doctor Who fans. There's a real joy in being able to produce actual physical pieces of all my favourite characters.

Radio Times

Wednesday, 12 April 2017 - Reported by Marcus
Radio Times (15 - 21 Apr 2017) (Credit: Radio Times)The latest edition of the Radio Times celebrates the return of Doctor Who on television this weekend with a front cover featuring Peter Capaldi and new companion Pearl Mackie.

Inside the magazine, Pearl explained how she went up for a part in "Mean Town":
It transpired it was an anagram for Woman Ten, the companion in the tenth series, because if agents had known it was a Doctor Who casting, they'd have put every client up for it. Just walking through the foyer (of the Soho Hotel) was nerve-racking, I rocked up in my Afro and bright yellow trainers and a baggy T-shirt, into this big glossy octagon foyer and they told me to wait in a room till they were ready for me - I almost ran away.
Capaldi was happy to reassure her, however:
I think you looked very cool there. You didn't seem fazed, you seemed to have a life beyond the scene. It was like Bill ha existed rather than saying lines for an audition.

The full interview can be read in the magazine, which also includes a brief synopsis of each episode this series by Steven Moffat - who also confirms that the episodes of his two-part finale will be called "World Enough And Time" and "The Doctor Falls".

The Radio Times is out now in the United Kingdom

BBC Books: new 12th Doctor adventures for April

Tuesday, 7 March 2017 - Reported by Chuck Foster
BBC Books have announced three new novels featuring the Doctor, Pearl and Nardole for 20th April 2017, tying into the new series which premieres the weekend before their publication.

Diamond Dogs (Credit: BBC Books)Diamond Dogs
Written by Mike Tucker
Published by BBC Books on 20th April 2017 (available to pre-order)

For over fifteen years the crew of Kollo-Zarnista Mining Facility 27 has been extracting diamonds from deep within the atmosphere of Saturn, diamonds that help to fund the ever-expanding Human Empire. But when a mining operation goes wrong, a rescue mission must be launched to save a worker lost overboard, a worker who claims that he has seen something amongst the swirling clouds.

Something that can’t possibly exist.

When the Doctor and Bill arrive, they immediately find themselves caught between hostile miners, suspicious security guards and corrupt company officials as they face accusations of sabotage and diamond theft.

And below them, in the crushing atmosphere of the gas giant, something is starting to rise.

“Here on Saturn, it literally rains diamonds.”

Mike Tucker is an author specialising in books for children and young adults, and has written several original Doctor Who novels, a number of Merlin novelisations, and original fiction for other shared universes. He has also written numerous factual books relating to film and television, including a history of the BBC’s Visual Effects Department, where he used to work. Alongside his writing, Mike works as a Visual Effects Designer, and his company – The Model Unit - recently won a BAFTA Craft Award for its miniature effects work on the 50th anniversary Doctor Who episode The Day of the Doctor.
Plague City (Credit: BBC Books)Plague City
Written by Jonathan Morris
Published by BBC Books on 20th April 2017 (available to pre-order)

“We should leave. We definitely should leave. But... chatty ghosts!”

The year is 1645, and Edinburgh is in the grip of the worst plague in its history. Nobody knows who will be the next to succumb – nobody except the Night Doctor, a masked figure that stalks the streets, seeking out those who will not live to see another day.

But death is not the end. The Doctor, Bill and Nardole discover that the living are being haunted by the recently departed – by ghosts that do not know they are dead. And there are other creatures lurking in the shadows, slithering, creeping creatures filled with an insatiable hunger.

The Doctor and his friends must face the terrifying secret of the Street of Sorrows – that something which has lain dormant for two hundred million years is due to destroy the entire city...

Jonathan Morris is the writer of the official Doctor Who Magazine comic strip, has written three Doctor Who novels for BBC Books and numerous audio adventures for Big Finish Productions and BBC Radio 7. He has also written for the TV sketch shows Dead Ringers and Swinging.
The Shining Man (Credit: BBC Books)The Shining Man
Written by Cavan Scott
Published by BBC Books on 20th April 2017 (available to pre-order)

“Being scared is the least of your worries.”

The Shining Men are everywhere. You spot them out of the corner of your eye. Abnormally tall, with long lank hair, blank faces and blazing eyes. If they catch you, they’ll drag you away to who knows where. No one is safe. They’re on every street corner. Waiting. Watching. Shining bright.

Of course it’s a hoax. It has to be, right? It started as a joke, a prank for Halloween. Then it went viral. Idiots dressing up as monsters. Giving folk a scare. Silly masks and fright wigs. No one gets hurt. Because bogeymen aren’t real.

Until people start going missing and lights burn in the darkness. Burning like eyes. But help is on its way, in the form of a strange man called the Doctor and his friend, Bill.

The Doctor will keep us safe. The Doctor will stop the monsters. Unless the monsters stop the Doctor first...

Number One Bestseller Cavan Scott has written for such popular series as Star Wars, Vikings, Warhammer 40,000 and, of course, Doctor Who. He’s the writer of Titan Comic’s ongoing adventures of the Ninth Doctor and was one of the 2016 World Book Day authors.
