Big Finish: Counter-Measures Series 2 Announced

Thursday, 12 July 2012 - Reported by John Bowman

Big Finish is to make a second series of Doctor Who audio spin-off Counter-Measures, it has announced.

The first series of four dramas is now available on CD and download and sees Simon Williams as Group Captain Gilmore, Pamela Salem as Rachel Jensen, and Karen Gledhill as Allison Williams reprising their roles from Remembrance of the Daleks. They are joined by Hugh Ross as Toby Kinsella.

Counter-Measures is set in 1964 and centres on the titular specialist organisation that is charged with investigating strange phenomena and dangerous new science.

The hour-long episodes have been written by Paul Finch, Matt Fitton, Ian Potter, and Justin Richards. The series is produced by David Richardson, script-edited by John Dorney, and directed by Ken Bentley.

The five-disc box set also includes an hour-long documentary that goes behind the scenes with the cast and crew.

Richardson said:
We've had a blast making this series, and enthusiasm and love for the characters and setting has resulted in four stories we're all very proud of.

On the strength of Series 1, a second run has already been commissioned and scripts are just starting to come in. We're all booked in to record in October, when Pamela Salem flies in from the US for the Counter-Measures reunion!
Series 2 - again comprising four episodes - will be released in July 2013 and is available for pre-order at a discount price.

August Release For Sonic Screwdriver Remote Control

Wednesday, 11 July 2012 - Reported by John Bowman
The universal remote control based on the Eleventh Doctor's sonic screwdriver will be available to buy in the UK from Friday 31st August, the BBC announced today.

As previously reported, the device, pictured here from the side and front, has been developed by BBC Worldwide in conjunction with The Wand Company.

The high-quality metal replica of the Mark VII sonic screwdriver is a gesture-based remote control that uses infra-red technology to manipulate almost all home-entertainment systems - from TVs and iPod docks to DVD/Blu-ray players and beyond.

With a green flashing tip and four modes – including a practice mode – and three memory banks, a total of 39 commands can be stored, giving users the option of operating multiple home-entertainment devices.

The sonic screwdriver universal remote control works via a series of 13 short gestures, such as rotating, flicking, or tapping, and a guided set-up procedure uses spoken prompts to match gestures to commands learnt from existing remote controls. In addition, the FX operational mode has a range of authentic vintage Doctor Who sound effects, while an in-built security setting comprising a three-digit PIN will prevent unauthorised use of the device.

UPDATE (7pm): A BBC spokeswoman told Doctor Who News that the remote control will be available to pre-order in the UK from the BBC Shop (coming soon), Firebox, and Forbidden Planet. DWN understands that the product will be available in the USA via the BBC America Shop and ThinkGeek from September.

Big Finish: Night of the Stormcrow

Monday, 9 July 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Big Finish have announced their traditional Christmas special release for their regular Doctor Who subscribers. Night of the Stormcrow will feature Tom Baker and Louise Jameson as the Doctor and Leela, with guest cast including Ann Bell (who starred with Jameson in BBC's Tenko) as Professor Gesima Cazalet and Chase Masterson (from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) as Peggy Brooks.

Producer David Richardson said:
Marc Platt has written a deliciously dark tale that should chill our subscribers in the winter nights. Night of the Stormcrow is about that nagging neurosis you get when you’re awake at 3:30 in the morning; the terrible fear of what is lurking in the pitch black...

Night of the Stormcrow will be free to all subscribers to the main Doctor Who range whose subscription includes the December release 1001 Nights. It may also be requested by 12-release CD or download by main range subscribers as a free bonus story. It will be available to buy from December 2013.

Night of the Stormcrow
by Marc Platt

High atop Mount McKerry sits the observatory. For years now it's been watching the skies. Now something's watching back. Something dark and huge that blots out the stars. Something with giant wings. Something that kills.

When the TARDIS is struck mid-flight, the Doctor and Leela crash-land on the mountain to find they are not the only aliens to be visiting. Beings of nothing infest the complex, staff members are dead or mad. As the survivors argue amongst themselves and attempt to take advantage of the situation, a creature vast and terrible is coming ever closer.

A creature called... Stormcrow.

Subscriptions to the range can be found via Big Finish website.

BBC Books: Autumn Releases

Wednesday, 27 June 2012 - Reported by John Bowman
A Dalek graphic novel plus a non-fiction title looking at the Doctor Who universe are to be brought out by BBC Books later this year.

The Dalek Project by Justin Richards and Mike Collins will be published on Thursday 6th September, and Albert DePetrillo, senior editorial director for BBC Books, said:
The Dalek Project has been many years in the making, and I know that fans will find it worth the wait. Justin's brilliant script – one of my favourite Doctor Who stories in many years – is brought thrillingly to life with Mike Collins's art. It's a big, bold, beautiful book, and I can't wait for people to read it.
Three weeks later, on Thursday 27th September, A History of the Universe in 100 Objects by James Goss and Steve Tribe hits the bookstores, and DePetrillo commented:
How do you convey the size and originality of the Doctor Who universe? It seems impossible, but James and Steve's book is perhaps the best place to start. They've selected 100 items from the history of the show and used them to tell a huge - and hugely enjoyable - story.

Anyone wanting to explore the deeply creative world of Doctor Who will love it – and Peter McKinstry's stunning artwork helps make this the ultimate gift for Doctor Who fans.

The Dalek Project
By Justin Richards and Mike Collins

A stunning new graphic novel, featuring the Doctor as played by Matt Smith.

1917. It's the height of the Great War and Hellcombe Hall is a house full of mystery: locked doors, forbidden rooms, dustsheets covering guilty secrets, and ghostly noises frightening the servants.

Most mysterious of all, the drawing-room seems to open directly onto a muddy, corpse-filled trench on the Western Front . . .

Arriving at this stately home, the Doctor meets Lord Hellcombe, an armaments manufacturer who has a new secret weapon he believes will win the war: he calls it ‘the Dalek’.

Soon, the Doctor and his new friends are in a race against time to prevent the entire Western Front from becoming part of the Dalek Project!

A History of the Universe in 100 Objects
By James Goss and Steve Tribe

The history of the Doctor though 100 famous - and infamous - objects!

Every object tells a story. From ancient urns and medieval flasks to sonic screwdrivers and glass Daleks, these 100 objects tell the story of the entire universe, and the most important man in it: the Doctor.

Each item has a unique tale of its own, whether it's a fob watch at the onset of the Great War or a carrot growing on the first human colony on Mars. Taken together, they tell of empires rising and falling, wars won and lost, and planets destroyed and reborn.

Within these pages lie hidden histories of Time Lords and Daleks, the legend of the Loch Ness Monster, the plot to steal the Mona Lisa and the story of Shakespeare's lost play. You'll find illustrated guides to invisible creatures, the secret origins of the internet, and how to speak Mechonoid.

A History of the Universe in 100 Objects is an indispensible guide to the most important items that have ever existed - or that are yet to exist.

Comics Guide To Be Published

Tuesday, 26 June 2012 - Reported by John Bowman
A guide to the first 15 years of Doctor Who in comic-strip form is to be published later this year.

Written by Paul Scoones and published by Telos, The Comic Strip Companion: The Unofficial and Unauthorised Guide to Doctor Who in Comics: 1964 - 1979 will chronicle the format from its origin in TV Comic to just before the ongoing strip was launched as a regular feature in Doctor Who Weekly. During this time, more than 200 stories were published in TV Comic, Countdown, TV Action, TV Century 21, the Doctor Who annuals, and the Dalek books.
CCFirst launched in the pages of TV Comic in November 1964, the comic-strip version of Doctor Who is just one year younger than the television series on which it is based. This is its story.

Every strip is covered in depth, including plot details, continuity, points of interest, and analysis. For the first time, details about the creation and development of the adventures are documented, alongside comments from some of the original writers and artists.

Follow the exploits of the Doctor in his first four incarnations alongside John, Gillian, Jamie, Sarah, and Leela as he battles Daleks, Cybermen, Quarks, Kleptons, Trods, Sarracoids, and the Ugrakks!

The A5 book will be approximately 500 pages long, including an eight-page colour section.

Scheduled for publication on Sunday 30th September 2012, it is available to pre-order.

At the moment, it is only being offered in paperback. However, David J Howe, of Telos Publishing, has said that a hardback run may be produced if there is enough demand for it - equating to roughly 100 people interested in buying one - in which case purchasers will be given the opportunity to upgrade pre-orders.

Scoones said that this book was the first of what would most likely be a number of volumes covering the comic-strip history of Doctor Who.
