Doctor Who Magazine 395

Tuesday, 29 April 2008 - Reported by Marcus
IT'S ALL OUT WAR IN DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE 395

David Tennant and the cast of the latest Doctor Who adventure discuss the war-loving, potato-headed, baddies in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine.

"Sontarans are great," beams David, while sitting on a deck chair, and watching a troop of Sontarans march across the Doctor Who set. "I think that's partly because they come from a very specific world. That back story gives them a great context. Robert Holmes didn’t just create a race, back in the 1970s: he created a world that they came from. Even if you never saw that planet, you understood why they did what they did."

Also this issue:

  • An exclusive interview with Georgia Moffett on what it’s like being the Doctor’s Daughter.
  • Previews of the next four episodes of Series Four - The Doctor’s Daughter, The Unicorn and the Wasp and Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead – featuring new and previously unpublished photos!
  • Russell T Davies reveals all about Partners in Crime’s top secret scene in Production Notes.
  • There’s a crisis in the Caribbean as Donna makes her comic strip début in Part One of The Widow’s Curse.
  • DWM visits Rome and reveals the true story of how a disaster was created, in an exclusive report on the making of The Fires of Pompeii – featuring interviews with actor Francois Pandolfo and writer James Moran.
  • Rose returns? Missing planets?! Vanishing bees?!? What can it all mean? We look at the clues.
  • What are Ood, but a reflection of ourselves? Find out as we go behind-the-scenes on the Ood-sphere and talk to the cast and crew of Planet of the Ood, including Keith Temple, Tim McInnerny, Paul Kasey and Adrian Rawlins.
  • Actress Louise Jameson tells what it was really like to work with Tom Baker in Doctor Who.
  • The Time Team discover if Karfel is really as awful as its reputation, as they watch Timelash.

PLUS all the latest news, exclusive photos, reviews, previews, competitions and even more!

Doctor Who Magazine is out on Thursday 1 May 2008 across the United Kingdom.

Radio Times

Monday, 28 April 2008 - Reported by Marcus
This week's Radio Times features an interview with Freema Agyeman who, last week, returned to Doctor Who in the role of Martha Jones, now a fully fledged member of UNIT. Has joining the Unified Intelligence Taskforce toughened her up? "It's affected her definitely" says Agyeman, "but she's still the same Martha underneath. She still wants to help and heal people,"

And who thought sparks would fly between Martha and Donna (Catherine Tate). "Too obvious!" laughs Agyeman. "Everyone was expecting that, so it's brilliant to have wrong-footed them." What about the Sontarans? Was she able to keep a straight face opposite them? "Tiny little warriors who look like potatoes, Well, they look cute, but they’re totally obsessed with war and bloodlust and death and honour. I think they're suffering a bit from small-man syndrome."

The Radio Times Website also contains a couple of articles related to the return of UNIT, including an interview with the Brigadier, Nicholas Courtney.

Doctor Who Adventures 60

Saturday, 19 April 2008 - Reported by Marcus
Doctor Who Adventures issue 60 is out now across the United Kingdom.
Press Release

Catherine Tate interviewed in this week's Doctor Who Adventures magazine.

You can't have failed to notice that there's a new person travelling aboard the TARDIS – Donna Noble, as played by Catherine Tate. In this week's Doctor Who Adventures Catherine Tate tells the magazine about the fun she's having playing the character.

Did she watch Doctor Who when she was growing up? "No! I remember the theme tune but it was never as interesting to me as Basil Brush. I didn't know the Doctor regenerated until Christopher Eccleston turned into David. It was incredible!"

About stunts: "Kneeling in the TARDIS is like kneeling on razor blades! I've got black and blue knees! I got absolutely battered during the first episode. David wants to do all his own stunts, though!"

If she could really time-travel, would Catherine go and meet herself in the past? "If someone came in now and said, 'Hi, I'm you at 50!' you wouldn't say, 'Oh, go on, take a seat!' I can't answer without my head exploding!"

Read the whole interview in this week's Doctor Who Adventures magazine. Free with this week's issue is a deadly Dalek pen and notepad and the second part of a massive double-sided poster – inside the TARDIS on one side, and the monsters of Series Two on the other.

PLUS:
Four cool posters: The Fires of Pompeii, an Ood, Donna and a Dalek!
The Fires of Pompeii: our favourite bits from last week's episode.
Planet of the Ood: be prepared for a trip to an alien world.
Quiz: test your knowledge on The Fires of Pompeii.

Doctor Who Adventures issue 59, is out now across the United kingdom.
Press Release

David Tennant talks about Doctor Who!

Doctor Who made an action-packed return to BBC One last Saturday! In this week’s issue of Doctor Who Adventures, you’ll find an interview with actor David Tennant, who talks about Donna and all things Who…

On Donna: "Usually I get all the funny lines but this year it's more shared out. The Doctor can get a bit pompous now and again – and Donna will cut him dead if he’s getting too big for his boots!"

On his favourite control in the TARDIS: "My favourites are the ones I can rely on. Sometimes they just come away in my hand! I like the big lever that is the take-off switch. It's probably the only one I haven't broken yet!"

On meeting the Fifth Doctor: "It was very exciting for me because I was a proper fan when he was the Doctor. It was all a bit too much for me to be honest! The first time we ran through the lines it was a very out-of-body experience. I was slightly nervous and overcome!" Read the whole interview in the issue!

This week’s Doctor Who Adventures magazine comes with a free set of Doctor Who magnets and the first part of a massive double-sided poster – with the Doctor on one side and all the monsters from series one on the other. Miss it and miss out!

Radio Times Details

Wednesday, 2 April 2008 - Reported by Marcus
In this week's Radio Times, Russell T Davies talks about how he goes about casting Doctor Who. "You can't really write with a guest star in mind - well, only in very exceptional cases. Kylie Minogue was one. There's a great danger in writing for someone and then they get offered a film, or they just don't fancy it. So it's dangerous territory to enter."

One of the things I love about this job is working with actors. It's such a strange process where you hand the script over to a bunch of complete strangers, but you have to trust them, and when you cast it well, that trust is paid back. Undoubtedly, they have fun doing it, but not so much fun that it looks like fun on screen." Every guest actor says, "My children would have killed me if I hadn't taken the part." Even those who haven't got children have nephews and nieces. Not just some of them say it – every single one of them does. It's a litany as they arrive. And it's absolutely true!"

Catherine Tate tells of her reaction when asked to reprise the role of Donna Noble, "I couldn’t have been more surprised. I went out to lunch with [executive producer] Julie Gardner and I thought we were just there to chat. When people say, “My jaw hit the floor". I know what they mean!". David Tennant talks about the Doctor's reaction to the reunion. "He’s pretty gobsmacked. Donna’s quite a force of nature, she doesn’t really take no for an answer."

The Magazine also contains an article on first producer Verity Lambert, and looks ahead to the tribute on BBC Fourthis weekend. It was to Lambert’s 60s version that Davies turned for inspiration when kick-starting new Doctor Who in 2005, because, "It was before the series became bogged down in any continuity. There was just mystery. An open road – that’s what she created."
