Doctor Who triumphs in SFX Reader Awards

Doctor Who has won six categories in the annual Reader Awards carried out by the sci-fi and fantasy title SFX.

More than 5000 readers of SFX were eligible to vote in 17 award categories.Doctor Who beat off fierce competition from shows such as Life on Mars, Lost and Heroes to win the Best TV Show award.

The Doctor himself, David Tennant, scooped Best TV Actor, whilst former assistant Billie Piper was awarded withBest TV Actress.

Doctor Who also picked up Best TV Episode for The Girl in the Fireplacewhilst Captain Jack Harkness, John Barrowman, was voted Sexiest Manfor his role in the show and spin-off series Torchwood.

Rounding off a bevy of awards, Executive Producer and Chief WriterRussell T Davies was inducted into the SFX Hall of Fame for his work in reviving the show, which had previously been axed by the BBC in 1989.

Doctor Who nominated for three Hugos

The Stage and Paul Cornell are reporting the nominations for the Hugo Awards 2007. Doctor Who is nominated three times in the "Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form" category, which the programme won last year with The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances.

This year, the episodes nominated are Army of Ghosts/DoomsdayThe Girl in the Fireplace and School Reunion.

The other two nominations in this category are episodes of Battlestar Galactica and Stargate SG-1.

Bafta Craft Awards nominations

Last year's series of Doctor Who has been nominated twice in the Bafta Television Craft Awards.

Crispin Green is up for an honour in the Editing: Fiction/Entertainment category, while The Mill has been put forward for recognition in the Visual Effects section.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at The Dorchester hotel in London on April 22.

Last year, the show was nominated for four craft awards but didn't win any, although Mike Tucker, who was in charge of the model effects, was in the team that scooped the gong for Best Visual Effects for the BBC1 drama/documentary Hiroshima.

POSTSCRIPT: As well as Doctor Who being nominated, The Model Unit, run by Mike Tucker, is also in line for an award for its visual effects work on Krakatoa: The Last Days, while Neill Gorton is nominated, alongside Vanessa White, for make-up and hair design on The Catherine Tate Show.

Top Television Drama

A vote by 200 of the UK's top Television professionals has rated Doctor Who the 26th Greatest Television Drama from the past 50 years.

The poll was commissioned for Channel 4 television for a special programme on Saturday night. Tributes to the series came from original producer Verity Lambertand the current Doctor David Tennant. Lambert's later productions The Naked Civil Servant and GBH also featured in the list.

Russell T Davies was also featured, both for his work on Doctor Who and his ground-breaking series Queer as Folk. Hillsborough, Our Friends in the North and Cracker, all co-starring Christopher Eccleston, came 37th, 8th and 7th respectively.

The Sopranos was voted best drama ever.

Doctor Who nominated for RTS drama award

Doctor Who has been nominated in the Best Drama Series category at the Royal Television SocietyProgramme Awards 2006.

The awards will be presented on Tuesday 13th March at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London. Other nominees in this category are Life on Mars and The Street.

This is the second year running that Doctor Who has been nominated in this category. Last year it lost out to the BBC Three medical drama Bodies.

Saturn Award Nominations

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films has announced the nominations for the 33rd Annual Saturn Awards, and Doctor Who has received two nominations: BEST SYNDICATED/CABLE TELEVISION SERIES and BEST TELEVISION SERIES RELEASE ON DVD.

Leading the nominations was Bryan Singer's Superman Returns with ten. Other notables were X-Men: The Final Stand (6), Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth (6), Lost (6), Heroes (5), and Battlestar Galactica (4).

This year marks the Academy's 35th Anniversary. The non-profit organization was founded in 1972 by film historian Dr. Donald A. Reed. The Academy is currently headed by Robert Holguin, who serves as President of the Academy.

The winners will be announced at this year’s 33rd Annual Saturn Awards, which takes place on Thursday, May 10, 2007 in Universal City. Hosting the event will be actor Greg Grunberg (Heroes) and comedian Jeffrey Ross.

Doctor Who nominated for Nebula Award

Steven Moffat's Doctor Who script "The Girl in the Fireplace" has been included in the Preliminary Ballot for the Nebula Awards for 2006. The awards, which have been run since 1965 by The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA), are due to be handed out in May. The SFWA has 1,400 members including some of the biggest names in science-fiction and fantasy.

The season two Doctor Who script is up against the scripts for "Batman Begins", by Christopher Nolan and Steven S Goyer, and "Howl's Moving Castle", by Hayao Miyazaki, Cindy Davis Hewitt and Donald H. Hewitt.

These nominations along with a dozen others are part of the preliminary ballot going to members of the SFWA who will help chop it down to a final ballot in March.

Catherine Tate wins Actress Award for Christmas Special

Catherine Tate, who co-stars this Christmas in The Runaway Bride, has won Best TV Comedy Actress at the British Comedy Awards tonight. The ceremony, which celebrates notable comedians and entertainment performances of the previous year, was broadcast live on ITV. Tate's award was specifically for last year's Catherine Tate Christmas Special, which was repeated this evening on BBC2. Tennant wins Heat Award

David Tennant has won Heat magazine's Best TV Acting Performance for his role in Doctor Who, voted for by the readers. The magazine comments: "Christopher Eccleston left big shoes to fill in the revived Doctor Who, but the effortlessly charming David Tennant did it with ease, playing especially well on the flirty, repressed love affair between the Doctor and Rose. But where was co-star Billie Piper on the list, eh?" (Helen Mirren - Prime Suspect - was voted in second place, and Lesley Sharp - Afterlife - in third.)
