The international version of the BBC iPlayer moved one step closer to fruition, with the BBC's President of Worldwide Networks and Global iPlayer, Jana Bennett, presenting the plans for a staged rollout across Western Europe over the coming months.

Speaking at the 2011 Banff World Media Festival yesterday, she explained that, unlike the domestic version, the international iPlayer is not restricted to programmes that have already been shown on television.

This version of the iPlayer will initially be a beta service available on Apple i-platforms, though other mobile and Internet-based access are expected to follow later. It was originally believed that the United States rather than Europe was the target for the initial roll-out, with the BBC's Director General, Mark Thompson, reporting in March that it would be offered as a monthly fee under the $10 mark; the European price is yet to be finalised, but is expected to be around €6-7 a month.

The Almost People has debuted in Australia to solid ratings. TV Tonight reports that the episode averaged 718,000 viewers in the five major capital cities. It was the sixth highest rating programme for the day overall (only beaten in its timeslot by the Channel Nine movie, '17 again'). The corresponding Confidential Cutdown also rated a respectable 541,000 viewers in the five major capitals. These overnight figures, however, do not include regional, rural and time-shifted viewers and hence significantly understate the actual national ratings.

The third annual French Comic Con takes place at the Paris-Nord Villepinte Exhibition Center between the 30th June and 3rd July, during which the two opening episodes of Series Six, The Impossible Astronaut and Day of the Moon, will make their French debut.

The two episodes form part of a series of events taking place around special Guest of Honour, Doctor Who's head writer Steven Moffat; timings have yet to be confirmed, but include:

• a public Masterclass on his work as a scriptwriter
• a public meeting on Doctor Who
• a signing session
• the screening of the French premiere of the first two episodes of Series Six
• a screening of A Study In Pink, the first episode of Moffat's other creation, Sherlock

The Rebel Flesh has debuted in Australia to excellent ratings. TV Tonight reports that the episode averaged 823,000 viewers in the five major capital cities. Again, it won its national timeslot, was the top-rating drama of the day and the fourth highest rating programme for the day overall (only beaten by news programs). The corresponding Confidential Cutdown also rated a respectable 598,000 viewers in the five major capitals. These overnight figures, however, do not include regional, rural and time-shifted viewers and hence significantly understate the actual national ratings.

Doctor Who will face the double peril of live football and Britain's Got Talent, for the final episode before the mid season break, according to schedules published today.

A Good Man Goes to War, which showrunner Steven Moffat promises will contain a 'game-changing cliffhanger', has been given a 50 minute slot between 6.40 and 7.30pm on Saturday 4th June. It will follow So You Think You Can Dance Live on BBC One and is followed by The National Lottery: Who Dares Wins.

As Doctor Who goes on air, ITV1 will be showing England playing Switzerland with live Football Coverage of the Euro 2012 Group G qualifier at Wembley Stadium, although the match should be over before Doctor Who starts. At 7pm they go into the Britain's Got Talent - Final, the show that has been winning the ratings on Saturday nights, but which has not yet been placed directly against The Doctor. BBC Two will show Dad's Army while The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is the film on Channel 4.

Again, it won its national timeslot, was the top-rating drama of the day and the fifth highest rating programme for the day overall. The corresponding Confidential Cutdown also rated a respectable 605,000 viewers in the five major capitals. These overnight figures do not include regional, rural and time-shifted viewers and hence significantly understate the actual national ratings.

Meanwhile, BBC Worldwide Australia have confirmed that Torchwood: Miracle Day will be fast-tracked to Australia debuting on UKTV Australia on Saturday 9 July 2011 at 8:30pm. Deirdre Brennan, Director of Television, BBC Worldwide Australia said:

Doctor Who fans in North America will have an extra long wait to watch the conclusion to this week's episode The Rebel Flesh.

The second part of the two part story will not be broadcast on BBC America or Canada's SPACE until Saturday June 4. The reason is the Memorial Day holiday weekend which takes place in the States next weekend. Memorial Day commemorates U.S. soldiers who died while on military service and unofficially marks the start of the summer holiday season. TV schedulers try to avoid planning any new programming over the weekend when a large number of people are away from home.

BBC America will be broadcasting a series of episodes from Matt Smith's time as the Doctor over the weekend. Both channels will show The Almost People, the conclusion to the two part story, on 4th June.
