The special screening event will be held this Thursday, 14 May, to celebrate 10 years since the Doctor Who franchise was revived and went into production at BBC Wales. The event will offer 220 industry guests a big-screen showing of recent episode Listen, starring Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor. We are very excited to be co-hosting this celebratory event in New York, which will be an opportunity to showcase the talent, skills, locations and innovation of the Welsh creative industries talent working on the Doctor Who series in Wales.

With millions of fans around the world, and significant viewing figures in the US on BBC America, we felt the 10 year anniversary was a great occasion to toast the team behind the franchise, and offer US industry practitioners an insight into the way the series has developed, as well as an overview of the creative industries sector in Wales.
Charles Tremayne, Chairman BAFTA New York, said:
Doctor Who is such an iconic part of British television culture that it’s always a privilege to celebrate it’s enduring success here in New York. The last 10 years since the re-launch in Cardiff have been among the most memorable of its many years on air. Apart from some great backstage stories, it will be great to hear from Steven how they keep Doctor Who so fresh and part of the zeitgeist around the world.
Steven Moffat said
I loved Doctor Who on screen, long before I ever worked on it, just as I loved New York in the movies long before I ever got to go there. It will be a pleasure to combine both fantasies.
Cardiff Business Council, sponsors of the event, will be hosting a reception to promote the capital city as the gateway to Wales, a country that has seen significant increases in production of film, television, games and commercials in recent years. Cardiff Business Council Chairman Nigel Roberts said
Cardiff is an international Capital City and we are delighted to take our place on the world stage at every opportunity to promote our Capital City Region and the whole of our country, Wales.

We have an excellent track record in attracting the creative industry to Cardiff, with the success of the Doctor Who Experience, Sherlock, Torchwood and Casualty, as well as the recent news that Pinewood has set up in Cardiff.

The creative industry is the fastest growing sector in Wales. Around a third of all Welsh creative industry jobs are based in Cardiff, with over 6,000 jobs in the capital. Terrance Dicks at 80

Sunday, 10 May 2015 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Terrance Dicks (Credit: Chuck Foster)Today we celebrate 80 years of the writer Terrance Dicks, who was born on the 14th April 1935.

Arguably the most prolific contributor to Doctor Who, as well as being script editor in the Pertwee era he also wrote a number of memorable adventures for the television series, including both the introductory story Robot for fourth Doctor Tom Baker and the series own 20th Anniversary celebration, The Five Doctors. His Target novelisations accounted for over sixty of the Doctor's adventures, and he was later invited to write a story for the launch of the Virgin New Adventures in 1991 (Timewyrm: Exodus), and then to launch the new official range of BBC Books in 1996 with The Eight Doctors. He has written for 21st Century Who, contributing the "Quick Reads" books Made of Steel and Revenge of the Judoon. He also wrote the novelisation of the Sarah Jane Adventures pilot, Invasion of the Bane.

Speaking of the Doctor's best friend, Dicks re-introduced the character for Big Finish, writing their first Sarah Jane Smith audio adventure Comeback.

He brought Doctor Who to the stage twice, with Doctor Who and the Daleks in Seven Keys to Doomsday in 1974 and then The Ultimate Adventure in 1989. He adapted both to be released on audio by Big Finish in 2008, and then wrote a followup to the latter, Beyond the Ultimate Adventure in 2011.

As well as fiction, he also co-wrote arguably the first ever reference book for the series, The Making of Doctor Who, first published in 1972 - a time long before the wealth of factual literature available to Doctor Who fans today! Other publications include The Doctor Who Monster Book and The Doctor Who Dinosaur Book.

For many of us of a certain age, however, he will always be *the* storyteller of the Doctor's early adventures.

Happy birthday, "uncle" Terrance!

Note: many Internet sites (including ourselves) had his birthday listed as the 10th May (hence today's post) - the writer has confirmed that he actually turned 80 in April! (with thanks to Andy Frankham-Allen, author of the forthcoming sequel to Terrance's Horror of Fang Rock, Beast of Fang Rock)

Osgood and the Zygons are back

Friday, 8 May 2015 - Reported by Marcus
Credit: BBC Worldwide

The BBC has announced the return of UNIT scientist Osgood, played by Ingrid Oliver, who will appear in the upcoming series of Doctor Who.

Much to the distress of her many fans, Osgood was killed by Missy in the series eight finale Death in Heaven, with showrunner Steven Moffat asserting her death was necessary to emphasise the immorality and ruthless nature of the Master.

However in science fiction, anything is possible, and Osgood will return in episodes currently being filmed in Cardiff.

Steven Moffat, lead writer and Executive Producer, said,
Osgood is back, fresh from her recent murder at the end of last series. We recently confirmed that Osgood was definitely dead and not returning - but in a show about time travel, anything can happen. The brilliant Ingrid Oliver is back in action. This time though, can the Doctor trust his number one fan?
Speaking on set, Ingrid Oliver commented on her reappearance
As every actor who’s worked on Doctor Who will tell you, there’s always the secret hope you'll get the call asking you to come back. To actually receive that call is both unexpected and brilliant. The word ‘honour’ gets banded about a lot, but it really is, it’s an honour. Especially because I was so sure Osgood was a gonner after the last series!
Osgood will return in a two part story written by Peter Harness, who wrote last year's episode Kill the Moon, which will also feature the return of the Zygons. First seen in the 1975 story, Terror of the Zygons, the shape shifting monsters made an appearance, along with Osgood, in the 2013 50th Anniversary story The Day of The Doctor/

Also joining Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman and confirmed for guest roles in the double episode is Jemma Redgrave, Jaye Griffiths, Cleopatra Dickens, Sasha Dickens, Abhishek Singh, Todd Kramer, Jill Winternitz, Nicholas Asbury, Jack Parker and Aidan Cook.

Doctor Who series nine will be back on BBC One in Autumn 2015 and further guest cast will be released over the coming months.

There is a schism. A splintering fracture running through the fabric of space and time. All that was and that will never be existing at exactly the same temporal point. Blink and you miss millennia, sleep and planets simply burn out and die. The Doctor needs you Earth people to help him try and save the universe and prevent all creation from collapsing in upon itself.
The presentation features the vocal talents of John Guilor as Doctors 1, 3, 4 and 5, Christopher Thomson as Doctor 2, Elliott Crossley as Doctor 10 and Jake Dudman as Doctors 11 and 12.

Big Finish to Produce New Torchwood Audio Plays

Sunday, 3 May 2015 - Reported by Marcus
Torchwood (Credit: Big Finish)Big Finish Productions, have announced they have secured the rights to Torchwood, and that they will produce six new stories starring Captain Jack and the team, this Autumn.

The licensing deal with BBC Worldwide will allow the team to recreate the series with members of the television cast, and the range will be launched in September with the return of John Barrowman as the irrepressible Captain Jack Harkness.

Conceived as a spin-off from Doctor Who, Torchwood was created by Russell T Davies and made its début on television in 2006. The top secret organisation Torchwood saved Cardiff (and often the world) from alien menaces and terrible forces, trying to keep the city safe from the inter-dimensional rift that ran through it. In charge of Torchwood was Captain Jack, a man who has been called: “A companion to the Doctor, a rogue Time Agent, an immortal, a dangerous con-man, and very good at parties.” Captain Jack can't be exterminated or trusted, and there's just no stopping him.

The new series of audio dramas will each focus on different members of the Torchwood team, exploring the impact that a mysterious event has on them. Starting off the range will be John Barrowman, who stars in The Conspiracy, a deadly thriller by David Llewellyn.

Torchwood creator Russell T Davies says:
Torchwood has been to the Moon, and America, and the Himalayas, but now I think it's finally coming home, to the brilliance of Big Finish.
Producer James Goss added
What's great about Torchwood is that it is as unstoppable as Captain Jack and just as persuasive. Torchwood has been a ratings success on nearly every BBC channel, and it's one of the few UK series to translate to America. It's already been a series of iPlayer-topping audio plays, and we are thrilled to continue it. It’s just so exciting to be starting off the range with a drama starring John Barrowman – he leapt at the chance to display a whole new side to Captain Jack.
Executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery says:
It's fantastic that we will be bringing Captain Jack back to life (for perhaps the thousandth time!) with Big Finish. There are many new Torchwood tales to be told and I can't wait for Jack and his team to defend the Earth once again. I am very grateful for the continuing faith that both the BBC and Russell T Davies has shown in us and very excited to enter into a new world for Big Finish.
Executive producer Nicholas Briggs says:
Torchwood is something we’ve wanted to do for ages. It has great characters and there are many stories to be told. Our mission is to bring a whole new series of dramatic adventures to life. We’re starting off with these more intimate, focused releases and will then move on to bigger casts and even wider scope. We’re very much looking forward to working with all the cast and it’s been such a pleasure liaising with Russell T Davies about this. He couldn’t have been more supportive and helpful. Our Torchwood producer, James Goss, has really hit the ground running and his tangible enthusiasm is already proving rather an inspiration to us.
Additional cast members for the series will be revealed later. Torchwood: The Conspiracy will be released in September 2015, with the remaining five instalments following monthly from January 2016.
