Torchwood International!

Monday, 7 June 2010 - Reported by Chuck Foster
TorchwoodThe BBC have announced that a new series of Torchwood will be produced by the BBC Wales, BBC Worldwide, and US network Starz Entertainment.

The series will see John Barrowman and Eve Myles reprise their roles of Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen, and will comprise of ten episodes overseen by series creator Russell T Davies. Other former cast members (like Gwen's husband Rhys played by Kai Owen) have yet to be confirmed, but new faces will appear in the team, with adventures taking place around the world.

Says Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning:
We have a long history of working with many U.S. networks but it is incredibly exciting to be working with Starz for the first time, as well as to be reunited with the best of British in Russell, Jane and Julie. Torchwood will burst back onto the screen with a shocking and moving story with global stakes and locations that will make it feel bigger and bolder than ever.

Jane Tranter, EVP, BBC Worldwide Productions:
Torchwood has attracted remarkable attention and loyalty in both the UK and U.S., and in this new partnership with Starz, the next chapter will not only reward our current fans, but also introduce new viewers to the most impressive instalment yet.

Chris Albrecht, LLC, President and CEO of Starz:
We're committed to programming exceptional television that is entertaining, imaginative and provides a premium TV experience, and by any measure the new concept for Torchwood fits that mandate. I've been part of successful partnerships with Jane Tranter and the BBC previously, and I'm very much looking forward to working with them again.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Albrecht added:
It was too good an opportunity to pass up. Each season of the show, the show has evolved and "The Children of Earth" was terrific as evident in it was just named a Television Critics Press Awards nominee. I'm interested in doing sci-fi and what I like a lot about "Torchwood" is it's a very classic sci-fi entry. It's all about the story, it's not about big effects. I thought "Children of Earth" evolved the franchise to a place where it could continue to evolve on pay TV with an American partner that could bring more production resources.

At the end of "Children of Earth" Torchwood was destroyed, so when we pick up in our world the need for Torchwood arises again. A lot of this story takes place in the U.S. as well with several characters that are in the U.S. intelligence forces and end up teaming up with Gwen and Captain Jack to deal with the situation at hand.

The Hollywood Reporter also spoke to Russell T Davies:
It's very much the next step. It's not a new version, it's not a reboot. We're simply moving countries. The show was previously a format show -- monster of the week. The breakthrough was "Children of Earth" and that it became one long story. It's not going to be 'Lost' and take 20 years to find out what's going on. It's going to have a most remarkable conclusion after 10 episodes.

We're simply going to tell a good story. I wrote the pilot 7 months ago irregardless of network. BBC1 is a prime-time channel, but a brave channel. I don't worry about content.

No date for production and eventual broadcast for the series has been announced, though some media sources have suggested it premiering during Summer 2011.

Fox withdraw from American Torchwood

Thursday, 22 April 2010 - Reported by Marcus
TorchwoodThe Fox Network has decided not to continue with plans for a US version of Torchwood.

BBC Worldwide have issued a statement saying that
BBC Worldwide Productions and the FOX Broadcasting Company have mutually agreed not to progress together with a 13-episode serialized 'Torchwood' format. We are currently in discussion with several interested networks.

Fox's involvement in developing an American version of the series was first reported in January. Russell T Davies was reported to be writing a pilot script, with Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter acting as executive producers. Tranter said that despite the withdrawal of Fox from the project, it is "still very much ongoing and very much alive."

Tranter has also dismissed rumours that an American version of Doctor Who was being planned. "It may well be confusing to have a British Doctor and an American Doctor at the same time" she said, "there is only one Doctor, so I don't see that happening".

Gareth David Lloyd pens Torchwood comic

Tuesday, 13 April 2010 - Reported by Chuck Foster
ComicActor Gareth David Lloyd - Ianto Jones from Torchwood - has penned a new comic strip to appear in Issue #21 of Torchwood Magazine.

ComicDavid-Lloyd'’s character, Ianto Jones, who died in Captain Jack’s arms in the recent Torchwood five-part series Children of Earth,’ gets a new lease of life and takes centre stage once again in this exclusive comic strip - a move that will delight all fans of the critically acclaimed Doctor Who spin-off.

Talking exclusively to the official Torchwood magazine, David-Lloyd said, "I feel I know this character implicitly. The narrative of this comic focuses predominantly on Ianto, and integrates a number of characters who have been missed by Torchwood'’s ardent followers."

The story, titled Shrouded, is made up of two parts and is as diverse as it is thrilling. Ianto, who struggles with his tumultuous feelings for Captain Jack from the offset, has his world turned upside-down by the visit of a familiar face from the future. Additionally, he is set a mission that could alter the course of life, as he knows it, forever...

Shrouded is illustrated by Pia Guerra, the critically acclaimed artist of Vertigo Comics' ground-breaking series, Y: The Last Man and more recently, Doctor Who: The Forgotten. Pia won ‘Outstanding comic book artist for 2006’ at the Joe Schuster Awards.

This is not the first time an actor has penned a story; back in 2009 Captain Jack himself John Barrowman co-wrote Captain Jack and the Selkie with sister Carole for Issue #14.

Torchwood Magazine #21 is released in the United Kingdom on 15th April, and in the United States from 11th May.

Barrowman not drawn on Torchwood's future

Friday, 5 February 2010 - Reported by Chuck Foster
John Barrowman appeared on tonight's Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, during which he discussed how Torchwood was responsible for him gaining his forthcoming role in the US series Desperate Housewives. When asked about for future of Captain Jack himself:
I don't know ... that's the answer I have to give you, I have no idea. I have no clue of what's going to happen, that's the official answer. That's what I am sticking to - I always say something else and and say something more, and I get in trouble for it, so I'm not saying anything more!
He went on to speak about meeting Matt Smith:
I did get to meet him once; we were doing some BBC publicity for Torchwood and he was being introduced to the PR department at the BBC, because he was getting briefed on what he's got to do and how his life is going to change. And he did say to me how "I'd love for our characters' paths to cross". I kind of think, with David finishing, Captain Jack might be done in the Doctor Who series. That's my feelings on it, but if they ask me to come back of course I would go back - I would go back in a second!
Jonathan Ross also confirmed that Matt Smith would be appearing on his show in a few weeks time.

The show is available on the BBC iplayer for the next seven days.
