3.7 million watched Doctor Who: Under the Lake, according to unofficial overnight figures.

Doctor Who, which had a share of 16.3% of the total audience, once more suffered by being placed directly opposite live Rugby, where this week, England V Australia was watched by an average of 8.04 million, to top the overnight figures for Saturday.

BBC One's top programme was Strictly Come Dancing, with 7.92 million watching. Casualty, which was directly after Doctor Who, had 3.77 million, just edging above The Doctor, although the positions are likely to be reversed when consolidated figures are released next week.

Overall Doctor Who was 5th for the day and is currently 43rd for the week.

Doctor Who The Magician's Apprentice has an official consolidated 7 day rating of 6.54 million viewers.

The rating issued by the Broadcasters' Audience Research Board, or BARB, includes all those who watched the programme within one week of transmission.

The final rating is slightly down on last year, where the majority of the season rated around 6.9 million viewers.

The rating puts Doctor Who at the 13th most watched programme of the week on all UK Television, and the 4th most watched programme on BBC One. The Great British Bake Off topped the charts with a consolidated audience of 12.35 million viewers, over 2 million higher than its nearest rival, ITV's Downton Abbey, which had 9.9 million viewers.

The figures do not include those who watched on the BBC iPlayer, where The Magician's Apprentice had over 1.3 million download requests in the week following transmission.

The Appreciation Index or AI is a measure of how much the audience enjoyed the programme. The score, out of a hundred, is compiled by a specially selected panel of around 5,000 people who go online and rate and comment on programmes.

The feature length version of The Magician's Apprentice / The Witch's Familiar had an audience of 0.64 million viewers on BBC One on Sunday afternoon, a 6.4% share of the audience. The programme was once more up against Rugby on ITV, this time Scotland v USA which had an average of 2.1 million viewers.

The Saturday night showing finished as 53rd for the week. Consolidated figures should be available next Monday.

The Witch's Familiar - Overnight Viewing Figures

3.7 million, a 16.6% share of the audience, watched Doctor Who, The Witch's Familiar in the UK, according to unofficial overnight viewing figures.

Doctor Who suffered by being placed directly opposite live coverage of the Rugby World Cup on ITV, where England playing Wales attracted an average of 8.3 million viewers, pushing the overnight audience for Doctor Who down to below 4 million for the first time since the series returned in 2005.

The Rugby coverage topped the day peaking at 10.8 million viewers, a 47.6% share. It pushed Strictly Come Dancing into second place for the day with 7.7 million viewers. Casualty had 3.8 million watching just ahead of the Doctor which was also beaten by the late news resulting in Doctor Who being fifth for the day.

On overnight figures Doctor Who is currently 47th for the week. Final consolidated figures, which should see Doctor Who's audience rise dramatically, will be released next week.

A feature length version of the first two episodes of the series, is being broadcast on BBC One later today.

Season Premiere Breaks Records in the United States

Peter Capaldi as the Doctor in The Magician's Apprentice (Credit: BBC/Simon Ridgway)Doctor Who The Magician's Apprentice was Doctor Who's biggest ever première in the states for the key demographic of Adults aged 18-49.

Overall the episode had 2 million watching, with 1.1 million being between 18-49, nearly doubling the S8 average, making BBC America the third most watched channel in that demographic for the timeslot.

The channel beat the big 4 broadcast networks and ranked only behind college football on ESPN and the finale of Sábado Gigante on Univision. Out of 100 returning dramas, Doctor Who is one of just 14 dramas to show any growth from its prior season premiere.

All tracked demographics showed increases from the season 8 average with the most significant increases seen among the younger viewers.

The episode was the #1 most social drama of the night based on ListenFirst's Digital Audience Ratings for Television. It was the #1 TV brand on Tumblr, the #1 drama on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube and the #2 drama on Instagram, following The Walking Dead. It was the #1 most social drama of the week.

The Appreciation Index or AI is a measure of how much the audience enjoyed the programme. The score, out of a hundred, is compiled by a specially selected panel of around 5,000 people who go online and rate and comment on programmes.

The score is on a par with the scores for Series Eight of Doctor Who, which averaged 83.3.

52% of the viewers responding, strongly agreed the programme was Fresh and New .

Doctor Who was 29th for the week on UK Television. However an additional 1.1 million viewers watched the episode on catch up on Sunday.

The Magician's Apprentice - Overnight Ratings

4.58 million watched Doctor Who, The Magician's Apprentice in the UK, according to unofficial overnight viewing figures.

Doctor Who was the highest rated show on BBC One for the day, just above Casualty, which had 4.34 million watching. The day was won by The X Factor which had an audience of 7.33 million.

Last year's series opener, Deep Breath, Peter Capalidi's first story, had an overnight audience of 6.8 million.

A final figure, including those who record the programme and watch it later, will be released next week, and is likely to show a substantial increase on the initial figure.
