An Adventure in Space and Time: David Bradley publicity photo released

Thursday, 11 July 2013 - Reported by Chuck Foster
The BBC have released a publicity photo of David Bradley as William Hartnell in costume as the first Doctor, taken from the forthcoming drama An Adventure in Space and Time, which will be broadcast in the Autumn as part of the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary celebrations.

A panel took place last weekend at Comic Con France featuring writer and executive producer Mark Gatiss, during which a special minute-long trailer was shown to the audience highlighting Bradley's Hartnell, plus clips of the production of Doctor Who including those featuring Daleks and Cybermen. Talking about the drama, Gatiss said:
It's essentially the story about four people: Sydney Newman, the man who came up with the idea; Verity Lambert, the first producer; Waris Hussein, the first director; and the first Doctor, William Hartnell. I've been trying to do this for about twelve years, and it's a wonderful story of how our favourite programme came to be. Principally, it's the story of one person's journey through the programme. The biggest problem really is that there are lots and lots of stories to tell, and I had to focus in on very particular parts.

As previously reported, the drama's recreation of the TARDIS console was on display over the weekend. Gatiss commented:
It was obviously very important for us to recreate the original TARDIS as closely as possible. Actually a strange thing happened: in the original series when you go through the doors there are brass pillars which had been hired from a prop company called Trading Post 50 years ago. The design team went back to Trading Post and asked if they had anything like this, and they said "what, those, over there?" - the same ones from the original show! So we just put them back where they used to be!

TARDIS Adventures at the Doctor Who Experience

Sunday, 7 July 2013 - Reported by Chuck Foster
An Adventure In Space And Time - TARDIS Console at Comic Con France, July 2013 (Credit: BBC)As reported last month, a further TARDIS set will be installed in the Doctor Who Experience for the summer. The new console exhibit was made for this Autumn's 50th Anniversary drama An Adventure in Space and Time, and is on display this weekend at Comic Con France, as seen in a photo released via the BBC's Facebook page.

The arrival of the 'original' TARDIS brings the total on display in Cardiff to four, joining the Fifth and Ninth/Tenth Doctors' console rooms in the exhibition and the original Eleventh Doctor version visitors can engage with within the Experience itself. If that wasn't enough, the Experience have also announced that during the summer there will also be a special tour available to see a fifth - in the form of the current TARDIS studio set at the nearby BBC Roath Lock Studios.

Further activities at the Experience this summer include a guided tour at weekends, taking in a number of recognisable locations that have featured in Doctor Who (and Torchwood) near to the exhibition. See the Doctor Who Experience website for more details on booking and availability.

Children's Laureate Writes Seventh Doctor E-Book

Wednesday, 3 July 2013 - Reported by John Bowman
The Ripple Effect, by Malorie Blackman (Credit: Puffin Books)Award-winning Children's Laureate Malorie Blackman has written the seventh e-book short story in the range celebrating Doctor Who's 50th anniversary.

The Ripple Effect, to be released on Tuesday 23rd July by Puffin Books in partnership with BBC Worldwide, sees the Seventh Doctor and Ace encountering Daleks - but these are Daleks with a difference.
When the TARDIS lands on Skaro, the Doctor and Ace are shocked to discover the planet has become the universal centre of learning, populated by a race of peace-loving Daleks. Ever suspicious of his arch-enemies' motives, the Doctor learns of a threat that could literally tear the universe apart . . .
Blackman said:
I have always loved Doctor Who - from the time I was a child and the Daleks used to make me run and hide behind the sofa, to Saturday morning pictures when I first saw the Doctor Who films featuring Peter Cushing, right up to the current Doctor with Matt Smith. So when I was asked to write a Doctor Who story featuring the seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, I didn't even need to pause to think about it. My answer was an immediate yes.

I've always found Sylvester McCoy's Doctor fascinating because of the way his character developed from a bit of a clown to a Doctor with a more Machiavellian streak. In my story, the Doctor's actions are responsible for a universal catastrophe which forces him to face up to his own fears and prejudices.

An extract is available via The Guardian's website, and a promotional video featuring Blackman will be available on the BBC's Doctor Who YouTube channel from Thursday 11th July.

Blackman, who will be the Children's Laureate until 2015, has written more than 50 books, including the critically-acclaimed Noughts & Crosses series of novels for young adults. She is acknowledged as one of today's most imaginative and convincing writers for young readers and has been awarded numerous prizes for her work, including the Red House Children's Book Award and the Fantastic Fiction Award. She has also been shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal. In 2005, Blackman was presented with the Eleanor Farjeon Award in recognition of her contribution to children's books, and in 2008 she received an OBE for her services to children's literature.

Details about the e-short for the Eighth Doctor will be revealed on Tuesday 6th August.

BFI Screenings: Ninth Doctor Stories Announced

Monday, 24 June 2013 - Reported by John Bowman
The BFI will be showing the episodes Bad Wolf and The Parting of the Ways to mark the Ninth Doctor's era for its Doctor Who At 50 season.

The two stories, written by Russell T Davies and directed by Joe Ahearne, first aired on Saturday 11th June and Saturday 18th June 2005 respectively. They comprised the Series 1 finale, which saw Christopher Eccleston hand over control of the TARDIS to David Tennant after an epic battle against the Daleks.

The screenings are being held on Saturday 24th August from 2pm at BFI Southbank. The special guests for the accompanying panel session are yet to be announced.

Tickets are being issued via a ballot system through the members' section, with BFI Champions able to enter the ballot from Monday 1st July and members from Tuesday 2nd July. The ballot will close on Friday 5th July and be run over the weekend of 6th and 7th July, with all entrants to be notified on Monday 8th July if they have been successful or not.

All tickets reserved for Champions and members through the ballot will be held until 8.30pm on Friday 12th July, and any that are unclaimed by then will be released for public sale on Saturday 13th July.

Although all the screenings in the season so far have been immediate sell-outs, returns and stand-bys are a strong possibility, so it's always worth checking back with the BFI.

The organisation is skipping from the Seventh Doctor's era to the Ninth Doctor's because of guest availability, with the Eighth Doctor event currently planned to be held sometime in September. The precise date plus guests are still to be confirmed and announced.

Charles And Camilla To Visit Doctor Who Studios

Thursday, 20 June 2013 - Reported by John Bowman
The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall are to pay an official visit to the Doctor Who studios in Cardiff next month to mark the show's 50th anniversary.

It will form part of the royal couple's annual Wales Week, in which they tour the country to publicise its positive aspects.

Their diary shows that on Wednesday 3rd July they will be meeting cast and crew members of Doctor Who during a set visit to the Roath Lock studios.

A spokesman for Clarence House, which is their official residence in London, said:
The Prince and the Duchess always enjoy their annual visit to Wales and this year they are looking forward to a varied programme of engagements including everything from Dylan Thomas's Boat House to Doctor Who's TARDIS! Their Royal Highnesses are also keen to highlight the vital work being done across Wales by some of the charities they are involved with.
While they are at Roath Lock the couple will meet Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman, and will encounter some of the Doctor's enemies as well. It is not known as yet which production team members will be presented to Charles and Camilla.

This won't be the first official brush with the world of Doctor Who for the Duchess of Cornwall. While opening the West Wilts Show in Trowbridge in July 2009 she encountered a Dalek and TARDIS at a display dedicated to the programme.

Earlier this month, Coleman was presented to the Queen when the monarch officially opened the rebuilt Broadcasting House in London.
