Sci-Fi Sea Cruise to end

Saturday, 12 July 2014 - Reported by Marcus
The Florida run Sci-Fi Sea Cruise event is to end after a run of 25 years.

The organiser, Dan Harris, will not be aranging any more cruises, at least in the foreseable future, after financial problems with the travel agency used to organise the trip.

Over the years, eighteen voyages have been organised, drawing such guests as Sylvester McCoy, Frazer Hines and Carole Ann Ford, with writers' workshops and Fan Audio & Video Workshops being organised.

Harris posted a message on the event website expressing his sadness at having to call time on the cruises.
After eighteen fan-tastic voyages spread across a 25 year span of time, it will feel very strange to not be looking forward to our next trip together.

Unfortunately, the travel agency with whom I had been dealing with for the last decade has gone rather disastrously out of business, with the owner now in jail....While none of our cruise members' vacations or funds were ever endangered, he has, however, left me in a position where the only responsible thing to do seems to be to call it a day for now, and just enjoy all of the good memories.

The Native Hue of Resolution

Tuesday, 8 July 2014 - Reported by Marcus
A documentary tracing the reasons why TV programmes were destroyed, and charting the worldwide hunt for Britain’s television past, is looking for funding for release on DVD.

The Native Hue of Resolution was originally screened at the British Film Institute in London last December, documenting the twenty year to find TV programmes missing from the official archives.

Since the 1993 launch of the BFI initiative to find missing TV programmes, much progress has been made, however thousands of programmes remain missing, believed wiped, including 97 episodes of Doctor Who. The documentary from Farcical Films/Kaleidoscope, made especially for screening at BFI Southbank, traces the real reasons why programmes were destroyed and charts the worldwide hunt for Britain’s television past.

Narrated by Peter Purves, it features contributions from, among others: Alan Bennett, Barry Cryer, Jasper Carrott, Peter Firmin, Paul Fox, Ray Galton, Alan Simpson, Hartley Hare, Terry Jones, Sue Malden, David Nobbs, Pete Murray and Pan’s People. Produced by Kaleidoscope’s Chris Perry, the film also features extensive footage found during production of the documentary, from programmes previously thought lost.

It is now planned to issue the film on DVD and include a disc of extras of previously lost TV material. The project requires some seed funding and a Kickstarter project has been formed to raise money for the venture.

Backers pledging £20 or more will receive wither a copy of the finished project, or an invitation to a launch event for the film in 2015.

Sunday, 6 July 2014 - Reported by Marcus
The Doctor Who Appreciation Society (DWAS) is to honour one of the founders of Doctor Who, Verity Lambert, with a special event held at the Riverside Studios in London.

Remembering Verity Lambert will mark the unveiling of a Blue Heritage plaque commemorating the work of one of the most significant and influential figures to work in British Television. The plaque will be on display at Riverside Studios until the venue closes for development in the autumn, when it will be placed into storage and then permanently mounted at the new Riverside media centre when completed.

To celebrate the unveiling of the plaque, DWAS will be showing, by special arrangement with BBC Worldwide, the BAFTA award winning drama An Adventure in Space and Time, in high definition at Riverside’s cinema, on the evening of 23rd July, starting at 7pm. This will be followed by an interview with Lambert’s friend and long time colleague, and the Director of the first Doctor Who story, Waris Hussein.

Tickets for the screening are available free-of-charge directly from DWAS, details on the society's website, and will be distributed on a first-come first-served basis, with a special allocation reserved for DWAS members.

Tour update, USA/Australia transmissions confirmed for August

Wednesday, 11 June 2014 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Following on from the World Tour announcement yesterday, both BBC America and ABC have reported via their press releases that Doctor Who will air in the United States and Australia respectively in August, with the former confirming that it will broadcast on the same air date (to be announced) as the United Kingdom.

Speaking of the tour, BBC America's SVP for Programming Richard De Croce said:
It’s a new beginning for one of the most popular series in the world and we couldn’t be more excited to have the Twelfth Doctor live in New York to promote the long awaited return of Doctor Who on BBC AMERICA. It’s going to be epic.
ABC's Head of Programming Brendan Dahill said:
ABC TV has always been the Australian home for The Doctor. Our audiences love him and embrace the series which was evident with the success of the recent 50th anniversary celebrations, which broadcast on ABC TV and iview. We look forward to welcoming Peter and Jenna down under.
Amanda Hill, Chief Brands Officer at BBC Worldwide said:
We were so bowled over by the global reaction to the 50th episode last year that we thought what better way to introduce the new Doctor than to take the team around the globe. Doctor Who encompasses British creativity at its best and we’re passionate about it being on the world stage. This tour is something normally reserved for Hollywood blockbusters but with Doctor Who it appears you can do anything you dream of and continue to challenge what’s perceived as the norm in TV.

Doctor Who - The World Tour

Tuesday, 10 June 2014 - Reported by Marcus
Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman are to embark on a World Tour, promoting the upcoming series of Doctor Who, which hits screens this August.

Fans in the UK will have a chance to see the couple at exclusive events in Cardiff and London on 7 August before they jet off, alongside showrunner Steven Moffat, visiting seven cities across five continents in 12 days to take part in a series of media and fan engagements

Peter Capaldi, speaking ahead of the tour, said:
It’s fantastic that so many people across the world love Doctor Who. After eight months solid filming deep in the world of monsters, Jenna and I are thrilled to be heading for the Planet of Fans.
Executive producer and lead writer Steven Moffat added:
I've always thought we'd all be a lot safer if the Doctor conquered the world, instead of the Daleks. Now with Jenna and Peter leading the charge, it looks like it's going to happen. I'll be bringing up the rear to handle the exposition scenes, and maybe carry some bags.
The tour marks the largest ever promotional undertaking in Doctor Who’s 50-year history and will take in Seoul (South Korea), Sydney (Australia) before hitting New York (US) on August 14. It continues to Mexico City (Mexico) and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) where the tour ends on August 19th.

More details of the itinerary will be available soon at www.doctorwho.tv/worldtour as well as reports from the tour as it happens, which fans everywhere will be able to enjoy across social and digital platforms.

BBC Worldwide’s ambition for the brand has grown considerably since the global success of the 50th Anniversary which saw the special episode The Day Of The Doctor broadcast simultaneously in 98 countries and in over 1500 cinemas across the world, setting a new record for event cinema in its first three days on general release.
