Doctor Who Magazine 420 comes with two different covers featuring new Doctor Matt Smith and new companion Karen Gillan who reveal all about playing the Doctor and Amy Pond.

In the magazine, Smith talks about how the Doctor’s costume may evolve, the nicknames that he and Gillan have for each other and playing football with James Corden for a scene in Episode 11.

Gillan, meanwhile, tells of Amy’s complicated relationship with the Doctor and Amy’s boyfriend Rory, what she thinks about wearing surprisingly short skirts, and her approach to playing the role of the Doctor’s new best friend:

Matt Smith becomes the first Doctor to grace the cover of a gay magazine when he features on the front of this months Gay Times.

The magazine has unprecedented coverage of the new series, with exclusive content including the first ever interview with the latest addition to the cast, Arthur Darvill. They speak with the Doctor’s assistant Karen Gillan, head writer Steven Moffat, executive producer Piers Wenger and and writers Mark Gatiss and Gareth Roberts, who reveals that Matt Smith is set to appear pretty much naked in episode eleven. According to the Sun, BBC Worldwide has inked a reportedly £10 million contract with Nintendo to develop a Doctor Who game for the Wii and DS consoles.

The game, still in the early stages, is said to feature Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor as well as key adversaries such as the Daleks, the Cybermen and the Silurians.

A BBC insider reportedly told the Sun, "This has been in the pipeline for years. We're delighted to have finally nailed down a deal. We went with Nintendo as they have huge appeal for families and Doctor Who is very much a family brand. The Wii console is key for us as it's something families play together."

The Sun quotes David Tennant as saying that the element that kept this from getting off the ground before now was how developers treated the character of the Doctor. "The video game was quite actively developed, but it's difficult to nail as the Doctor doesn't blow things up. He's not Batman, who goes around smacking people in the head."

The insider added: "BBC Worldwide, which licenses BBC shows, has been trying to find some way of doing it. But you can't have Doctor Who blowing things to bits with a laser gun. That would massively change the nature of the show."

According to the Sun, the plan is to have the game in shops in time for the 2010 Christmas season.

Every year, the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films hold the Saturn Awards; the 36th award ceremony will take place on 24th June, and Doctor Who has been nominated in a number of categories.

For the Best Television Presentation award, The End of Time is up against sister show Torchwood's Children of Earth. Other contenders include the new versions of The Prisoner and V, plus Alice and The Tudors.

Best Actor in Television includes David Tennant for The End of Time; he'll be up against Josh Holloway and Matthew Fox from Lost, Stephen Moyer from True Blood, plus Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Michael C. Hall (Dexter) and Zachary Levi (Chuck).

Best Guest Starring Role in Television sees Bernard Cribbins nominated for his portrayal of Wilf in The End of Time; others up for the award are Raymond Cruz (Breaking Bad), Michelle Forbes (True Blood), John Lithgow (Dexter), Leonard Nimoy (Fringe) and Mark Pellegrino (Lost).

In media, Best DVD Television Release sees both Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead and Torchwood: Children of Earth in the running, against Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles: The Complete Second Season, Primeval, Volume 2, Lost: The Complete Fifth Season and Life on Mars: The Complete Series

Voting is currently taking place for the Broadcasting Press Guild's 36th Annual Award Ceremony. The Doctor Who franchise has been nominated for three awards this year, with David Tennant nominated for Best Actor (Doctor Who/Hamlet), Eve Myles nominated for Best Actress (Torchwood/Framed), and finally Russell T Davies nominated for Best Writer (Doctor Who/Torchwood). The winners are chosen by members of the Guild, and takes place between the 11th and 18th February.

The Television and Radio Industries Club hold their annual TRIC Awards on 9th March at the Grosvenor House, London; Doctor Who has been nominated in the "TV Drama Programme" category, up against Doc Martin and Shameless. Winners are chosen by members of the industry.

The revived series of Doctor Who has yet to win an award from either organisation, though actress Billie Piper won the "New TV Talent" category at TRIC's 2006 ceremony.


New assistant Karen Gillan has been nominated for "Best New Scottish Actor/Actress" at the second Scottish Variety Awards, taking place at the Glasgow Crowne Plaze Hotel on 26th March.


The SFX Weekender convention took place over the weekend, and Doctor Who fared well in the various sci-fi categories: Best Actor went to David Tennant, Best Actress to Eve Myles, Best Television Episode was won by Torchwood: Children of Earth Day Five, and Best Collectable to the Journal of Impossible Things. In the SFX Choice Awards, new head writer Steven Moffat was the "Hope for the Future", whilst character Ianto Jones was chosen as "Cult Hero". Russell T. Davies was present to accept the actor and episode awards, and you can read his speeches on the SFX website. The full awards will feature in a forthcoming issue of SFX Magazine.

John Barrowman appeared on tonight's Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, during which he discussed how Torchwood was responsible for him gaining his forthcoming role in the US series Desperate Housewives. When asked about for future of Captain Jack himself:

The BBC has confirmed our story from yesterday that David Tennant and Catherine Tate will return to Radio 2 on Saturday morning when they once more stand in for Jonathan Ross.

It will be the third time the duo have stood in for the presenter, hosting the three hour radio show. This weeks guests include Anthony Head, who appeared in the Series 2 story School Reunion playing Mr Finch, Ricky Gervais and the rock band La Roux.

We understand the programme was recorded on Friday and will not be live. Radio 2 can be heard around the world via the BBC Website. The programme begins at 1000 GMT.
