Dead Woman Laughing Available on CDBookmark and Share

Monday, 11 September 2017 - Reported by Marcus
Dead Woman Laughing (Credit: Fantom)Fantom has announced the release of an audio version of Daphne Ashbrook's autobiography, read by the author.

The actress, who played Dr. Grace Holloway alongside Eight Doctor Paul McGann, first released her biography in 2012.

Witty, self-effacing and painfully honest; the themes of life, death and laughter come together as Daphne Ashbrook recounts her many on-and off-screen scrapes with mortality. Packed with rich anecdotes from her career in TV, stage and film, this refreshingly candid and conversational memoir spans a childhood in a theatrical family to pulling back the curtain of Hollywood, revealing the glamour and ridiculousness of a business mired in a struggle between art and profit.

Known for both her comic timing and deep emotional portrayals, Daphne has appeared in many TV and film roles including the 1996 Doctor Who movie, in which she played the role of Dr. Grace Holloway and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as the titular character in Melora. Reflecting on her life and her career, Daphne discovers the surprising patterns and hilarious absurdities that accompany being a modern-day professional actor. The result is an amusing, informative and intimate memoir.
Co-produced by Spokenworld Audio, Dead Woman Laughing is now available unabridged over 5 CDs priced £15.99.

Lethbridge-Stewart: The Cruel OilBookmark and Share

Monday, 11 September 2017 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Lethbridge-Stewart: The Cruel Oil (Credit: Candy Jar Books)Candy Jar Books has announces its latest pdf-only short story, The Cruel Oil by Harry Draper. This can be downloaded for free from the Candy Jar website.

Range Editor Andy Frankham-Allen introduces the story:
The Cruel Oil is a result of our recent short story open submission window. It was a simple but intruiging pitch; When disaster occurs at a North Sea platform, and dead bodies preserved in tar from the spillage begin to disappear from their morgues, Lethbridge-Stewart and Anne Travers discover just how cruel the oil of Earth can be... Upon reading the full outline I just knew it contained a ‘classic era’ feel, and would be better suited to Anne Travers and Bill Bishop. Which led me to another idea...
Twenty year old Harry Draper is one of the youngest authors to write for the Lethbridge-Stewart range. Originally from Bristol, he nows lives in Ormskirk, west Lancashire, and explains a little of his long-standing desire to write some Doctor Who related material:
Just over ten years ago, I read my first Doctor Who book in my local Waterstones. Naturally, having failed to grow up all this time later, I leapt at the opportunity to submit a pitch to the Lethbridge-Stewart short story opportunity. When Andy suggested the idea of depicting Anne Travers and Bill Bishop's first date, and Anne coming to terms with her father's death, I knew then we had a story worth telling. Now, at long last, it has materialised! And no one is safe from the Silhouettes. Here's to never quite growing up.
The Cruel Oil is set shortly before the novel The Dreamer’s Lament, released last month.

  • It is also possible to order a preview copy of the new Lethbridge-Stewart spin-off, The Lucy Wilson Mysteries, announced last month. The book is due to be released commercially early 2018, but limited copies are available now via the Candy Jar website.

  • Candy Jar Books is also offering an exciting new opportunity for aspiring writers. Launching at Candy Jar Book Festival in Cardiff, writers can submit a short story based on the Doctor Who character – Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart. More details can be found in this article.

Class Officially CancelledBookmark and Share

Thursday, 7 September 2017 - Reported by Marcus
Class - Ep6 - Detained - April (SOPHIE HOPKINS), Matteusz (JORDAN RENZO), Ram (FADY ELSAYED), Tanya (VIVIAN OPARAH), Charlie (GREG AUSTIN) (Credit: BBC/Simon Ridgeway)Doctor Who spin off Class has been officially cancelled by the BBC.

The news was confirmed by BBC Three controller Damian Kavanagh speaking today at a Broadcasting Press Guild.
No, [we're not bringing it back]. There was nothing wrong with it – I thought Patrick did a great job, he explored an amazing world.

In honesty, it just didn't really land for us on BBC Three. Things sometimes don't, and I've got to make decisions about what we're going to do from a drama point of view.

There are always times when you do something and you have to decide that it's not going to come back. Class is just one of those things.
Class was created to appeal to the young adult market and initially released in the UK on BBC Three, now an online only platform. It was hoped that high-quality original content would drive young viewers to the online station. However, the decision meant that Class was initially only seen by a fraction of the audience it would have received on a broadcast channel.

The series was later screened on BBC One, but as a late night double bill, where it struggled to find an audience, getting viewing figures around a third of the timeslot average.

In June, writer, and creator of the series, Patrick Ness announced that he would not be involved in any future commission of Class and today the BBC finally confirmed that the Corporation would not be making any more episodes.

Black Archive #13: Human Nature / Family of BloodBookmark and Share

Sunday, 3 September 2017 - Reported by Marcus
Black Archive #13: Human Nature / Family of Blood (Credit: Obverse Books)The latest issue from the Dark Archive, looking at the production of the Tenth Doctor story Human Nature / Family of Blood has just been released.

The book details the production of the Series Three story. It is available in paperback or in digital form from Obverse Books.

Even in one of 21st-century Doctor Who’s more complex seasons, Human Nature / The Family of Blood (2007) is a standout story: a narrative with mythic ambitions, which illuminates the true nature and character of the Doctor through the courage and failings of his unknowing human alter ego, John Smith.

Uniquely, the story is also an adaptation of an original Doctor Who novel, scriptwriter Paul Cornell’s Human Nature (1996). Though no specific incidents, and few characters, remain the same, the adaptation is remarkably faithful given the given the differing demands of context, era, and medium. Both versions deal with war and trauma, humanity and the alien, school, and family, though sometimes with differing emphases. In particular, the treatment of pacifism and the claims of World War I to be a ‘just war’ changes significantly.

As the story of a ‘god’ who becomes human and must sacrifice his life to save the world, the two-parter also opens up questions of theology unusual in Doctor Who, which adds an extra dimension to the overall season arc, and to the development of the character of David Tennant’s Doctor.
